Industrial Importance of Date
Date is mostly sugar. In dried date, the sugar concentration
rises to 85 per cent. The sugar found in date does not convert
into crystalline as a result of the attraction of humidity,
thus, it is often called the "liquid sugar."
Liquid sugar, which can be readily extracted from low-quality
dates, is widely used in a number of manufacturing industries,
including in chemicals, pharmaceutical and food.
Likewise, date's essence is used for industrial purposes such as
production of vinegar and other foodstuffs. 15 kilos of date
will normally produce 80 liters of vinegar.
Date's flour is also used to make biscuit, cake and other
cookies. Every palm tree produces 15 kilograms of rejects every
year, which is used in the production of chipboard.
Medical
and Pharmaceutical Properties of Date
Date is a nourishing fruit, crammed with phosphorus, calcium and
large quantities of Vitamin A, which helps the body absorb
calcium. It also contains some amount of Vitamin B1 which
strengthens the nervous system.
Recent scientific research attests that the amount of iron
required by the human body can be supplemented by taking a
handful of dates. Every 100 grams of date contains 3-6
milligrams of iron. Iron rejuvenates the red blood cells,
therefore, date is medically prescribed to ease anemia.
Date is also known to boost the body's immune system, preventing
renal diseases and all kinds of cancer. It also strengthens the
muscles, nervous system and other vital organs.
Global Date Output
The annual output of date world-wide is estimated at 2.6 million tones, 90 per cent of which are produced by Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia and Pakistan. Iran's closest rivals in the production of date are Algeria and Tunisia.
Global Date Exports
The year 1989 saw the most amount of date exported to the
world markets, while 1992 proved to be the most profitable for
date exporters and sellers, revealed a report.
Every tone of export-bound date fetched 820 dollars in 1993, up
by 14 per cent from 710 dollars in 1983.
However, the global price for date is volatile, in part due to
fluctuations in the volume of date shipped to the global
markets.
Major Exporters of Date
In 1993, the Islamic Republic of Iran produced 31 per cent of
the world's output, up from a meager six per cent in 1982 and
mostly overshadowed by the Iraqi exports.
Before sustaining substantial losses on its palm groves during
the Persian Gulf War, Iraq was the leading exporter of date in
the world, accounting for 50 per cent of global exports. The
war, however, drastically curbed Iraqi exports to a lean seven
per cent of the global production.
Major Importers of Date
A number of European countries including France, Britain and
Germany, import large consignments of date in bulk, which they
packet and re-export to other countries.
Almost all the European countries which import date are
exporters of the product. Meanwhile, Japan, Canada and some Arab
countries are regular buyers of date in the world market.
